Apple is slated to introduce a trio of new iPhones next month, and even if you’re not interested in having the latest and greatest every year, Apple’s release of new models means changes for what’s currently on the market, as well.
Is the iPhone X worth buying right now or should you wait until September?
The iPhone X is an excellent device. In fact, it’s arguably the best iPhone that Apple has ever released. On the flip side, it’s the most expensive iPhone ever released; and a year later, that price is starting to show itself. The iPhone X starts at $999 – and despite the fact that $1,000 smartphones have become the norm over the last year, it’s hard to justify spending that much on a year-old product.
As is the case every August – the month before Apple releases its new iPhone lineup – one of the most common questions out there is if one should wait for the new iPhones or go ahead and purchase last year’s models. Perhaps this year more than ever, the answer is clear: wait.
There are a pair of reasons why it makes entirely more sense to wait than to rush out and buy right now. First and foremost, new hardware from Apple means new choices for you.
The current iPhone lineup consists of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. While there are three devices, you’re rather limited in your choices. Want an OLED display? The iPhone X is your only option. Want Face ID? The iPhone X is your sole choice. Want a budget price? The iPhone 8 – and its age-old design – is your only pick.
Much of that changes this year. All three of the new iPhones will sport Face ID, two of them will sport an OLED display. The 6.1-inch LCD model will cater towards the lower-end of the market and feature an iPhone X-like design.
In addition to the added variety, the introduction of new iPhones also means the current models will become cheaper. Reports have suggested that the 2018 iPhone X refresh will drop the entry-level price to $899, with the iPhone X Plus coming in at the $999 price point.
Thus, this means the current-gen, 2017 iPhone X will also get cheaper. While it’s unclear at this point how, or if, Apple will sell the 2017 iPhone X once it introduces the new 2018 models, carriers and retailers will undoubtedly have excess inventory they’re looking to get rid of. If the new 2018 iPhone X does indeed start at $899, we will likely see the 2017 model going for below $800 through retailers and carriers.
With that being said, the one instance where I would say it’s ok to buy the iPhone X as it stands today is if it was on sale at a price point equivalent to less than $800. Keep an eye on 9to5Toys if that sounds interesting to you.
Again, the purpose here is not to say you should wait merely out of seeing ‘what’s next?’ or getting the latest and greatest device. If you can hold out just three weeks, you’ll have more options to choose from at varying price points. The iPhone X is a great device, but you might be kicking yourself in a few weeks if you run out and pay full retail for it today.
