Arguably the highlight of this era was True Detective, where he played misanthropic cop Rust Cohle. The show paired him with Woody Harrelson (Venom 2) and a combination of a their performances, a great, hard-boiled story, and Cary Joji Fukunaga’s atmospheric direction made it the must-watch series of 2014. Instead of following the same characters again, True Detective season 2 took the anthology approach and focused on a new cast instead, led by Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, though it received a more mixed response than the first season. The future of the series was in question following the reaction to season 2, but the third season eventually arrived in 2019. The cast was led by Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff (Blade) and the season once again attracted positive reviews.
True Detective season 4 is currently being developed, though it’s unknown who will star or when the show might return; considering the three-year gap between season 2 and 3, it might take a while. Fans would love to see a sequel to the first season, but while Matthew McConaughey has stated his interest in revisiting Rust in some form, Woody Harrelson has said he’d prefer to leave it alone, as he doubts a return could live up to audience expectation.
With the launch of streaming service HBO Max in May 2020, it’s unlikely HBO shows like True Detective or Watchmen will make their way to rival platforms in the near future. Thankfully, however, there remains a lot of ways for viewers to find the acclaimed detective series online.
