Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan thinks it’s time for a female 007 to grace the big screen. Brosnan replaced Timothy Dalton as James Bond and kept the role for four movies from 1995 to 2002. Brosnan would play the iconic 00 agent for Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day before Daniel Craig stepped into the role in 2006.

Craig will be playing Bond in one more 007 movie, which was recently titled No Time to Die, but will be replaced after this outing as the character. MGM and Eon Productions are no doubt searching for his replacement, which has resulted in several rumors as to who could step into the shoes of Bond. Actors such as Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba have been rumored to be taking on the role, as well as Superman actor Henry Cavill. Director Matthew Vaughn even said he would direct a Bond film if Richard Madden was cast as 007. Brosnan previously stated he wanted Tom Hardy to be the next Bond, but now he has an opinion on a more controversial casting decision.

When talking with THR, Brosnan was very enthusiastic about the potential of the next Bond being female. When asked his opinion on the matter, Brosnan stated, “Yes! I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years, get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.” While Brosnan is on board for a female 007 movie, he expressed doubts that it would actually happen while Barbara Broccoli is in charge of the series.

While it hasn’t been announced who will replace Craig, it looks like a female 007 will be introduced in No Time to Die… sort of. It’s been reported that Captain Marvel actress Lashana Lynch will play the new 007 agent in No Time to Die, but she isn’t replacing Craig as James Bond. Instead, it’s believed that Lynch’s character Nomi will be the replacement 007 agent for Bond after he leaves MI6 at the end of Spectre.

A white male actor could be cast as the next Bond, but it is possible that a woman or person of color could play 007. Broccoli has said before that “anything is possible” when it comes to the next 007 movie, but it’s anybody’s guess who could actually be cast. If an actress was actually cast in Bond 26, it would no doubt be a controversial decision. Fans have been following the 007 movies since 1962 and have gotten used to Bond being a suave ladies man, so casting a woman would be the biggest change the series has ever seen. That being said, casting Bond as a woman could be one way to keep the 007 series fresh after seeing the same type of character for nearly 60 years.
