James Corden said rapper Kanye West was “a complex fellow” after he canceled his Carpool Karaoke appearance not once, but twice. Ultimately, they took the collaboration to the skies and did the bit on an airplane.
West’s now-legendary appearance on Corden’s famed segment has been viewed more than 14 million times to date. However, it almost didn’t happen according to the late-night host. He recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and both hosts dished about their Kanye connection, as Kimmel admitted he has “been in the mix with Kanye” himself. According to Corden, he and West were set to film Carpool Karaoke when the performer canceled the duet just days before it was scheduled to happen. Corden said it was a disappointment, but he took it in stride. The second time West canceled, Corden was literally driving down his street with cameras in tow. He was barely given advance notice. The third time, West texted Corden and said he wanted to do the segment on a bus or truck in Los Angeles, with West’s full choir involved. Initially, they were going to do the segment on a Monday, but by Wednesday, Corden hadn’t received any confirmation. Finally when West reached out, he flaked… again.
Then, in an exciting plot twist, West reached out to the host and said he wanted the segment to take place on a plane. Corden admits he was still pretty skeptical, even as he boarded the aircraft. However, he’s thrilled with the result. “Being on that plane surrounded by that choir, sitting with him, he was in a great place in the best mood, I will never forget what that choir sounded like on that airplane,” he added, according to People.
In the segment now nicknamed, “Airplane Karaoke,” West spoke candidly about marriage and fatherhood. He also talked about his much-publicized battle with mental health, as well as the deepening of his faith. West, Corden, and a 100+ member choir performed songs like “Jesus Walks,” as well as tracks from Jesus Is King.
Corden has given fans of his show and this renowned segment a real gift by dishing the behind-the-scenes dirt on its origins. It’s those rare moments when things don’t line up that the best art is created. Throughout Airplane Karaoke, West looked energetic, happy, and focused. He and Corden had wonderful chemistry as they sang and praised in each other’s presence. Corden is a true music fan, so it was probably a career bonus for him, too. If they ever collaborate again, it’ll be interesting to see how they top the moment. This pairing, as well as others between Corden and Adele, Corden and Migos, and even Corden and Rod Stewart, are definitely worth a look-see.
