On Wednesday, The Late Late Show host James Corden finally spoke out about the towing controversy in a joking response regarding the Carpool Karaoke. The late-night host set the record straight.

James Corden has hosted The Late Late Show since 2014. The British comedian and host has a popular recurring segment called Carpool Karaoke, where he drives all over Los Angeles with celebrity guests, typically musicians. He and the guests sing songs together, answer questions, and even do some dance routines. Previous guests include Kanye West, Michelle Obama, and Ariana Grande.

While filming an upcoming segment of Carpool Karaoke with Canadian singer Justin Bieber, a fan caught a video of Corden and Bieber in a car. The fan posted a video on Twitter. The video revealed that Corden does not actually drive the vehicle, which upset a lot of people. It showed the black SUV Corden uses during the bit, being pulled by a truck with tires attached to the back. Corden responded almost a week later, saying it was “fake news,” and that it “looks bad” for the show. Check out Cordon’s full response in the clip below:

All jokes aside, Corden said that 95% of the time, he is indeed driving the vehicle himself. He told viewers, “I always drive the car unless we’re doing something where we think it might not be safe, like a dance routine or a costume change or if I’m drunk.” Corden joked that he kept “getting lost” in Justin Bieber’s eyes, causing the safety concerns. Some friends were outraged, even stating it was “the worst lie since Santa.” After addressing some of the angry responses on the allegations, Corden also let viewers know that it is TV, and lots of things aren’t as they seem. He revealed, “Sometimes we do things just for the sake of entertainment.” Cordon gave examples, revealing that the show doesn’t actually film at midnight but at 5 pm. He also told watchers that they also never use the carpool lane and that he actually does not need the celebrity guests to really help him get to work, most of the time he is already there. He was most offended that he’s “done something that upset people more than Cats.”

Corden ended the segment showing two lists, one of every Carpool Karaoke where the vehicle was towed, and another list of ones where he was indeed driving. As a “Man of integrity,” Corden reiterated the fact that he is not a fraud, and he does indeed drive the vehicle. He then used the opportunity to plug Carpool Karaoke, the series, which is streaming exclusively on Apple TV.
