Director James Gunn shares that Margot Robbie and he love the idea of Harley Quinn and Groot teaming up. Gunn and Robbie will be teaming up themselves for the Guardians of the Galaxy director’s new incarnation of The Suicide Squad. Although the 2016 version of the DC ensemble film brought in $747 million at the box office, it was panned by critics and audiences. In Gunn’s new and reportedly more comedic version of Suicide Squad, new actors will be featured, such as John Cena, Taika Waititi, Idris Elba, Alice Braga, and Nathan Fillion. However, one of the few positives from David Ayer’s 2016 version, Robbie’s Harley Quinn, will return and likely have a strong presence in the film.
Robbie most recently returned as the Harley Quinn character for Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which she opted to make instead of Gotham City Sirens, a film that would have seen Harley join popular DC characters like Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Unlike Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey has received a lot of praise as it currently sits with a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 80 percent and an audience score of 83 percent. The appreciation it is receiving will likely mean we’ll see another Harley Quinn story down the line, but according to Gunn, the director in charge of Robbie’s next screen outing as Harley, Robbie and he have discussed quite a unique idea for Harley Quinn.
On Twitter, Gunn replied to a fan who asked him if he could pick a character from his Guardians of the Galaxy films and one character from The Suicide Squad to meet each other, who would he pick? Gunn responded by saying: “I’ve discussed this extensively with Margot Robbie and I think Harley and Groot would have fabulous adventures together.” He also wrote that “there are other great combos I’d bring up… if we at #TheSuicideSquad weren’t keeping things under wraps…” You can see the full tweet below:
Whether fans ever expected to hear of an idea where Groot and Harley Quinn would come together is one question. But whether they would have ever expected to hear that the man responsible for Groot becoming a beloved MCU character and the actor behind Harley have actually discussed this dream team-up “extensively” is doubtful, especially a few years ago when Gunn was not even a part of the DC universe. Just the mention of those two unique characters teaming up will likely leave the minds of many fans swirling and thinking of possible journeys those two characters could be on together.
Of course, despite Gunn currently playing in both the DC and Marvel playground, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll ever be able to bring the two characters together for one film. It would be somewhat of a miracle if DC and Marvel came together for this joint venture. However, the very idea of this paring will likely continue to be discussed down the line, and who knows, we may see some fan art for it as well. Gunn did also mention in his tweet that there are other “combos” he would have brought up if details on The Suicide Squad were not being kept so quiet. Perhaps there is an exciting pairing within the DC universe that fans are not yet aware of, and maybe The Suicide Squad will possibly shed some light on this in the summer of 2021.
