James Gunn has shared a first look at the upcoming film The Suicide Squad through a storyboard. Suicide Squad 2, which has officially been titled The Suicide Squad, will be the follow-up to the 2016 film that was directed by David Ayer. After Disney fired Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the director jumped over to DC to work on The Suicide Squad. Gunn has since been rehired by Disney, but will direct The Suicide Squad before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Suicide Squad is currently on track for a summer 2021 release date with Gunn directing, but that wasn’t always the plan. At one point it was believed that Suicide Squad 2 could be released in 2018, but the film obviously got delayed by a few years. Several directors were also in talks to helm the project before Gunn, including Mel Gibson, Guy Ritchie, and Gavin O’Connor. Gunn is now officially on board for the project and it looks like he is on the storyboard process of development.

In a screenshot from James Gunn’s instagram story, the director can be seen working hard on an illustration for a storyboard. It is hard to make out what exactly is drawn no the notecard, but Gunn captioned his post “My beautiful storyboards are back #TheSuicideSquad”. The screenshot, courtesy of Thomas Polito, can be seen below.

Suicide Squad had several DC villains such as the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). However, The Suicide Squad has been called a “total reboot”  and is said to introduce several new members to the team. The DC villains King Shark, Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher have all been confirmed for the sequel, but there are some team members from the first movie that are also returning. So far, only Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Amanda Waller are said to be returning for the sequel.

This sneak peek of the film might not give fans too many details about the project, but it should be reassuring at least that the project is actually making progress. Fans might not be able to tell what is being drawn in this storyboard at this point, but it is always fascinating to look back after the movie has been released to see which of Gunn’s storyboardsd came to life. Gunn has shared storyboards in the past for films like Guardians of the Galaxy, so hopefully The Suicide Squad will be able to match the success he has seemed to have with Marvel thus far.
