Director James Gunn is hoping that Disney’s Blu-ray of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will release in 4K HDR. The format has become increasingly popular in recent years as the quality of home TVs has dramatically increased, but Disney have yet to buy into the trend. No Marvel films thus far have a 4K UHD Blu-ray component on the market.
James Gunn is hopeful of changing all that when it comes to the release of Guardians Vol. 2, perhaps paving the way for future UHD versions of other Disney movies.
In a red carpet interview Gunn discussed the technical aspects of Guardians Vol. 2, claiming that some parts of it are in 2K and others are in 4K. He also claims that he’s attempting to get the “4K HDR version out on home video” but that all depends on Disney. Check out the interview, above.
To summarize, James Gunn wants the full cinematic experience to be made available to viewers at home. His hesitance in confirming the support of Dolby Vision is understandable - as despite having enough clout with Disney to be called back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Blu-ray distribution all comes down to the studio.
Disney’s reluctance to break into the 4K Blu-ray market might just be a waiting game. 1080p Blu-rays have been the most popular format of home movies with consumers for years, but more and more home devices have become compatible with superior quality forms that support the likes of Dolby Vision and UHD. Not all consumers are utilizing these features however, and until more people are ready to make the switch to more expensive UHD Blu-rays, Disney probably won’t begin distributing 4K home versions of its movies. Recent industry predictions suggest that such a shift won’t come about, as physical media formats like DVD and Blu-ray are steadily shouldered out in favor of streaming and digital purchases.
The Guardians films seem particularly well-suited to Dolby Vision, which is an end-to-end process that gives the director more control than ever over the color and visuals of their movie. Its 12-bit color depth is capable of accessing over 68 billion colors, which has played a key role in defining the Guardians movies’ overall aesthetic, so far. A 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be as close to cinema-quality as anyone could achieve at home, but streaming technology has also broadened to include HDR and Dolby Vision formats. While Disney may be unlikely to bow to Gunn’s call for a 4K home video release of Guardians Vol. 2, fans could see the director’s vision fully realized in a digital format - provided you have a steady internet connection and decent bandwidth.
