Although Jane the Virgin ended with Jane Villanueva and Rafael Solano getting their happily ever after, there are many fans who rooted for the original dream team: Jane and Michael. Before she lived a life with Rafael, Jane was happily married to Michael Cordero.

The couple had their struggles, but they always pulled through until the day Michael (allegedly) died. Jane and Michael shared their burdens with one another and encouraged each other to follow their dreams. They would have made a great long-term team if their time hadn’t been cut short. Here are 10 times Jane and Michael were relationship goals.

Their First Meeting

On Jane’s 21st birthday a police officer showed up at her house for a noise complaint. Under the influence and egged on by her friends, she thought the police officer was a stripper. She grabbed his gun, aimed up and pulled the trigger, thinking it was fake. When a very real hole appeared in her ceiling, Jane instantly sobered up.

The party came to an end, but the officer stuck around and watched a telenovela with her. They kissed, and the ceiling hole sent snow falling on them. Thus began Jane and Michael’s story.

Michael Supports Jane’s Decision to Keep the Baby

After she is artificially inseminated with Rafael’s baby by accident by his sister, her gynecologist, Jane must decide whether or not to go through with the pregnancy. Generous as always, Jane chooses to have the baby to give Raf the chance at fatherhood. But she also decides to keep the baby to raise as her own.

Michael isn’t thrilled at first, but he comes to the conclusion that he wants Jane for better or for worse. He’s willing to accommodate their new crazy reality for the chance at life with Jane.

Jane’s Proposal

Michael backs out of his proposal to Jane after she drops the pregnancy bomb on him. A series of miscommunication ensues as the two say the wrong things to each other. But Jane is head over heels in love with Michael and unwilling to part with him so easily.

She puts on a spectacular yellow dress and shows up at his precinct, ready to go down on one knee. She can’t manage the gesture, but she still proposes to him in front of all his cop friends, unabashed.

Camping

Before they became Mr. and Mrs., Jane and Michale took a camping trip as one of their early dates. Everything about the ordeal was miserable. Jane was not the outdoorsy type and Michael proved rather impatient. Sunburned, sweaty, and mosquito-bitten, the couple faced the possibility they weren’t made for each other.

But Michael made Jane smile when he presented her with a whittled giraffe that looked nothing like the animal. In that moment, they realized they may be different people, but that wasn’t a bad thing.

Still Young and Fun

When Jane’s cousin comes into town, she makes Jane feel old and boring. Michael assures Jane that wild and reckless isn’t her style. Jane isn’t plain—she’s just smart and cautious. Michael reminds her that there’s nothing wrong with being safe and having a plan.

To prove they are still a young and fun couple, he takes the stage at Jane’s office party and starts singing. No one knows that Michael is Jane’s husband, and one coworker remarks what a weirdo he is. But Jane is happy and comments that he’s her weirdo.

Jane Helps Michael Recover

On their wedding night, before they consummate the marriage, Michael is shot by Rose disguised as his new partner. His condition is dire, and Jane makes the difficult decision to do a dangerous surgery that could kill her new husband or give him a fighting chance.

She knows he’d want to do the surgery, so she honors that, even though it scares her and is not what Michael’s mother wants. But the surgery goes well, and, ever the devoted wife, Jane stays by his side as he goes on the mend.

Home Honeymoon

After Michael gets out of surgery and is recovering from his wounds, he feels bad that they had to postpone their honeymoon. To make up for it, he asks Jane’s dad Rogelio de la Vega to help him decorate the bedroom like a cruise ship.

Jane and Michael couldn’t go to Puerto Rico, but Michael, recently shot, still thinks of his wife’s happiness and brings the island to them. They share a margarita in bed while Jane researches Mateo’s new biting phase. It’s a perfect moment that shows nothing keeps this power couple down.

Search for a Home Together

Jane and Michael lead a rollercoaster life together but they finally got the chance to find their dream home together. In classic Jane fashion, she makes a budget and organizes a list of neighborhoods to narrow down their search. The house has to fit with Mateo’s school district and be within their limited budget.

When they find the right house, the moment is magical. Jane’s imagination takes over and shows how she plans to build their family’s home. Michael, of course, is happy with anywhere Jane feels is home, because Jane is his home.

Ferris Wheel Rides

Although the couple shared a magical first kiss when they met, their first few dates that followed were rough. Jane had been casually seeing another guy and things were not exclusive between her and Michael. But, one night at a carnival, sitting at the top of a Ferris wheel, Michael made his intentions known.

Jane agreed and from there, their love story took off. Years later, as Michael prepared to take the bar exam to become a lawyer, Jane took him to the top of the Ferris wheel once more, to remind him they were in it together.

Wedding Vows

It was a long road to their wedding day, but it finally arrived. Jane showed up late after having to take an urgent meeting with her advisor and then Rogelio’s car breaking down. But she made it to the altar where she and Michael exchanged their vows. Jane recited hers in English while Michael said his in Spanish.

He’d worked for weeks with her grandmother Alba to get it perfect. Michael always respected Jane’s family and culture and wanted to honor it for their wedding.
