After five seasons and 100 chapters, Jane the Virgin came to a close. Like all good romance stories, there were happily ever afters. But not all characters rode off into the sunset with the love of their lives. Some met their much-deserved fates and others’ endings were lackluster.

The fans clambered for the plot twists along the way, rooting for their favorite characters and couples. But not all the plotlines were satisfactory by the story’s end. A few endings were earned while others should never have happened. Here are five characters who got fitting endings, and five who deserved more.

FITTING ENDING: Darci Factor

Darci Factor came on the scene as a seemingly perfect counterpart to Rogelio de la Vega. The two engaged in a romantic relationship for a time, but their similar personalities turned that pairing sour. But the animosity between them resulted in a baby and led to Darci meeting Esteban Santiago.

Rogelio’s nemesis turned out to be his baby mama’s lifelong love. Darci proved vindictive and malicious at times, but it stemmed from being burned so many times. The weird family she became part of with Rogelio and crew gave her what she’d always wanted.

DESERVED MORE: Krishna

Petra’s harried assistant spent a great deal of her screen time enduring her employer’s short temper and abusive words. Krishna became so fed up with the treatment that she turned to blackmail to get back at Ms. Solano. But the plan backfired on her and she ended up in jail.

Still, after making a deal she returned to Petra’s side as her assistant. While part of the deal was that Petra should treat her better, Krishna deserved the chance to move on from that chapter of her life.

FITTING ENDING: Lina

Lina and Jane met in elementary school and became fast friends. Their opposite personalities proved that relationships based on contrasting characters make the best friendships. She disappeared for a bit after Michael died, as Jane unintentionally pushed her away.

But once the best friends made up, Lina showed up a few more times on the series. Her story ended with the announcement of a newborn on the way after her sister donated an egg for her to conceive. From party girl to married and soon-to-be mom, Lina’s arc gave fans great satisfaction.

DESERVED MORE: Fabian

Rogelio’s former co-star on a telenovela played the part of Jane’s love interest for a while. But Jane merely wanted to hook up with him and engage in a purely physical relationship. He wanted more. Jane used him and eventually caused a rift between him and her dad.

This led to both actors giving the telenovela’s producers the ultimatum to choose between them. After conducting a focus group, Fabian got the boot. He only ever wanted to love Jane, and instead, he got used and fired from his job.

FITTING ENDING: Magda

Not all characters deserved a happily-ever-after. Magda, Petra and Anezka’s devious mother, got exactly what was coming to her by the end of the series. She was evil and a cold-hearted villain who used her daughters for nothing more than money.

She manipulated and abused them, turning the twins against each other. She pushed Alba down a set of stairs, nearly killing her. When Petra banished her from the U.S. Magda sought out a third sibling the twin sisters didn’t know about. But her exile was somewhere as frozen as her heart.

DESERVED MORE: Luisa Alver

Rafael’s trainwreck of a sister made a mess with huge domino effect repercussions. One hundred episodes later it turned out to be the best mistake of her life, but her character was mostly used for laughs. Luisa Alver made many mistakes, but her heart was always in the right place.

She cared so deeply for her family and they always pushed her away, leading her back into the arms of a psychotic killer that gave her the love she craved. Eventually, she freed herself of Rose’s allure, but her ending was left open-ended.

FITTING ENDING: Petra Solano

Jane Villaneuva’s nemesis turned best friend had the greatest character development of all on the show. She went from being her mother’s pawn and manipulative ex-wife to an independent businesswoman with compassion and heart.

She definitely did some despicable things along the way, but that made her road to redemption all the more interesting. While Petra did fine on her own, it was nice to see her get a happy ending as well with Jane Ramos. Plus, she was one of the few LGBTQ+ characters to get that kind of ending.

DESERVED MORE: Xiomara

Ro and Xo were a great couple, but Xiomara’s story always felt so tied to Rogelio’s and never her own. For a time she ran a dance studio she owned but gave that up once she no longer felt fulfilled by it. After her bout with cancer, the fans wanted to see Xiomara get a truly happy ending.

While she stayed married to the love of her life, she was bound to him in the end, making the move to New York for his career. It never felt right to her because she was leaving her family behind.

FITTING ENDING: Jane and Rafael

There was a time when Team Michael ruled the fandom, but by the end of the show, many fans rooted for Team Rafael. Jane and Raf’s chemistry ran hot from the beginning of the series, but their partnership by the end felt more than passionate. It felt right.

They made a fantastic parenting team and faced so many trials together that the base of their romantic relationship lay in friendship. It only made sense that they should get married and have their dream family with Mateo. They worked hard for it.

DESERVED MORE: Michael Cordero

In season three when Michael died, Jane and the fans alike were left heartbroken. But as the story continued and Jane moved on, his chapter felt bittersweet but complete. When the show brought him back with amnesia, making him a totally different Michael, it felt like a disservice to the goofy detective everyone knew and loved.

Michael’s return fueled nothing more than a tired love triangle that the fans were already over. Giving him the happy ending with Charlie in Montana and a baby on the way felt like a consolation prize for him.
