Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday is the rare Friday The 13th sequel without a Jason face reveal at the end - here’s what he looks like underneath the mask. Following the surprise success of the original Friday The 13th work soon began on a follow-up. The issue there was the movie’s killer Pamela Voorhees ended the story without a head, so a new villain was needed. It was decided to make her son Jason - who supposedly drowned years before - the new killer, and while this made little sense storywise, Friday The 13th Part 2 introduced horror fans to a new slasher.
Jason Voorhees became even more iconic when he donned his trademark hockey mask in Friday The 13th Part 3. Jason has been on a wild ride ever since, being killed in part four, resurrected in part six, going to space and facing a rival slasher in Freddy Vs Jason. A planned Friday The 13th reboot was cancelled when it was gearing up for production in 2017 and due to rights issues, it could be some time before Jason returns to the big screen.
One of the most controversial entries of the series was Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday. Producer Sean S. Cunningham originally planned to press ahead with Freddy Vs Jason in the early 1990s but when that was delayed, The Final Friday was put in production to tide fans over. Jason Goes To Hell has the title character destroyed in the opening scene, only for his evil spirit to body hop and possess others on his quest to be reborn. Director Adam Marcus later revealed he intended Jason to be a Deadite from the Evil Dead franchise, with Pamela having resurrected him using the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, which features in the movie’s plot.
Jason himself doesn’t get much screentime in Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, only appearing in the opening and finale. His mask is arguably the grossest of the franchise and has essentially fused to the skin on his head. For this reason, there’s no unmasking like previous entries. Fans had to wait until the release of Friday The 13th: The Game to see the gruesome reveal. He’s not super pleasant to look and has decayed to the point where pieces of his skulls are visible. A trip to the dentist is also advisable.
The video game is an easter egg nirvana for franchise fans, so it makes sense it would be the one to finally unmask Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday. While the sequel ignores the events of previous entry Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, it appears the idea of Jason’s mask being fused to his head came from that movie’s ending where he drowns in toxic waste. In this case, it’s probably best if Jason keeps the mask on.
