Jason Momoa has congratulated Zoë Kravitz on landing the coveted role of Catwoman in the upcoming DCEU outing, The Batman. After an exhaustive search and a number of screen-tests, Kravitz was confirmed yesterday to have seen off competition from Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska, and Eiza González. The Big Little Lies star is the daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet and will star as Selina Kyle opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne (aka. Batman). The character of Batman was most recently played on the big screen by Ben Affleck. After debuting in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck reprised the role for a brief cameo in Suicide Squad and more prominently in Justice League. Following the underwhelming reception of the latter, however, Affleck stepped away from the role.
Momoa himself is no stranger to the DCEU. After a breakout role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, Momoa was cast by Zack Snyder in the role of Arthur Curry. He made his first full appearance as the character opposite Affleck, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and more in Justice League. Despite Warner Bros subsequently choosing to switch tracks with regard to their comic book adaptations, Momoa reprised the role in a solo Aquaman outing back in 2018. The film went on to shatter the box office and a sequel was rapidly greenlit. Having been in a relationship with Bonet since 2005 and then officially married in 2017, Momoa is also Kravitz’s stepfather.
In the wake of the casting announcement, Momoa took to his personal social media to offer his congratulations. Sharing a picture of them together at presumably a family get-together, the Hawaiian actor declared that he was “so proud” of who he referred to as “zozo bear”. He went on to declare that he is “so freaking stoked” about both the news and the fact that his own children with Bonet can call their big sister Catwoman. “Your [sic] going to have so much fun,” he concluded. Written and directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is rumored to be based on the popular comic book storyline, The Long Halloween. The film is currently set to also star Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon. Meanwhile, Jonah Hill is reportedly also in talks for an unspecified villain role. Such other famous DC characters as Harvey Dent (aka. Two-Face) and even Dick Grayson’s Robin is rumored to be a part of Reeves’ story and are currently being cast. In the meantime, Kravitz has been hard at work on a television version of High Fidelity and Momoa will next be seen as part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune.
It’ll be sometime before fans get to see actual footage of the film or Kravitz in action as the feline-based femme fatale and antihero. That, however, won’t stop people from having their own opinions on the casting. It is already being applauded by those familiar with her work, though, with many deeming Kravitz a perfect choice. As such, Momoa is merely lending his voice to an already significant chorus and will only spur on people’s envisioning of Aquaman and Catwoman enjoying family holidays together. And try and some might, it’s unlikely that anybody will be able to dampen the celebrations and positivity their particular extended family will indulge in the coming months, leading up to and even beyond The Batman’s eventual release.
