I Am Jazz’s Jazz Jennings is skipping college for a year to “recenter.” It is quite normal for most young adults to take a year off before attending college, but rarely do people pass up a chance at an Ivy League education.

Being accepted to an Ivy league school is a very hard feat, but deferring to take a gap year is surely a brave choice. That is exactly what Jazz Jennings chose to do instead of taking classes in the fall semester. Cambridge, Massachusetts will just have to wait a bit longer for the reality TV star’s arrival. The past year has been hard for Jennings as she graduated high school, had a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend (who fans met on season 5 of her show), and had her gender affirmation surgery.

The 18-year-old took to Instagram and announced that she had some news to share with her followers, as reported by People. She explained that she had taken the time to “recenter” herself and decided that was not the right time to attend college - specifically Harvard University. In her statement, she said that the past couple of years have been a whirlwind, and she realized she needed to take some time to “be the strongest version" of herself. The reality star revealed she was having trouble knowing where Jazz the activist ends and Jazz the teenager begins. Check out her post below:

In May, Jennings revealed that, with the help of her parents, she had made the decision to attend the prestigious university and was looking forward to starting the next chapter of her life. The LGBTQ activist admitted that she was anxious about how she would handle her mental health while attending college. The TLC star was looking forward to college being a great place where she would have learned to be more independent and build healthy habits within her routine. She addressed that her anxiety and depression could become a greater deal as the scholarly world was known to have much more pressures and expectations.

Many fans are worried that the young star is burned out from constantly being in the public eye. The pressure of an Ivy League school may be too much for the young adult who is still in the midst of finding out who she is. Jazz was one of the youngest people to publicly identify as transgender and has helped people understand her community through her outreach. Fans are reassured knowing that Jazz is independent and will always make the decisions that are best for her and her family.
