Jazz Jennings, the star of I Am Jazz, shows off her “battle wounds” from gender confirmation surgery. The transgender activist has been sharing her journey since she was a young girl, aiming to inspire others to be their true selves.

Jennings has made a name for herself thanks to her bravery when it comes to speaking out for the LGBTQ community. She was recently accepted to an Ivy League school, but decided to take a gap year instead. Cambridge, Massachusetts will just have to wait a bit longer for the reality TV star’s arrival. The past year has been hard for Jennings as she graduated high school, had a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend (who fans met on season 5 of her show) and had her gender affirmation surgery.

The TLC star took to her Instagram on December 31st to share her gender confirmation scars with the world. The activist called her scars her “battle wounds” in her Instagram slide show. In one picture Jennings is shown to be posing on a beach in a dark red bathing suit with a scar that is below her bikini line. She wrote, “These are my scars on full display in #2019. I’m proud of my scars and love my body just the way it is. I call them my battle wounds because they signify the strength and perseverance it took to finally complete my transition.” The scars signify her strength and determination that it took for her to complete her transition, check out Jazz’s full post below:

The Florida native went under surgery for gender confirmation back in June of 2018, which was also documented on her TLC show, I Am Jazz. But in October the star told fans that she had a complication and was forced to undergo a second procedure. During Jennings’s initial surgery the doctors had to use a new technique due to her having started hormones at a young age so she did not develop enough tissue to contrast a vagina. The reality star’s healing was set back but luckily it was only cosmetic and not an internal issue. Jennings has always said she knew from a young age that she was in the wrong body and the surgery was surreal when it was finally completed as she could finally be validated as a woman.

Jennings’s family had always been extremely supportive, especially her mother, Jeannette Jennings who nursed her back to health after her two surgeries. Jeannette did tell cameras that a small part of her was processing the last reminder of having born a son but was very much okay with the outcome as she has a healthy, happy daughter now. TLC has I Am Jazz and is set to premiere season 6 sometime 2020.
