Avengers star Jeremy Renner has shut down his app because of too many trolls creating fake Jeremy Renner profiles to imitate him. Launched in 2017, the app was designed to offer a personalized feed for Renner fans where they could view pictures and videos of the actor, comment on his posts, and purchase “stars” to boost their comments in the hopes that Renner himself might see and respond to them.
Sadly for those who have invested in the Renner app, both emotionally and financially, over the past couple of years, this invasion of trolls has killed it. Renner posted a farewell message on the app this week, lamenting that, “The app has jumped the shark. Literally.” Citing “clever individuals” who had created profiles to impersonate himself and other users, Renner said that he has asked EscapeX, the company that designed the app, to immediately take it down and provide refunds to any users who had purchased stars over the past 90 days. “What was intended to be a place for fans to connect with each other,” he wrote, “has turned into a place that is everything I detest and can’t or won’t condone.”
Upon its rediscovery by the wider world of non-hardcore Jeremy Renner fans, the app was met with a mixture of bafflement and amusement. Popular YouTuber Danny Gonzalez spotlighted the app in a video, explaining that it’s “basically like Instagram, but the only person who’s allowed to post is Jeremy Renner. And the only thing you’re allowed to do is give him money.” EscapeX has developed similar apps for many celebrities and influencers, including Arrow actor David Ramsey, Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan, and American Gods lead Ricky Whittle. Though he might seem like an odd choice of celebrity to have his own app, Renner was actually one of the most high-profile stars on EscapeX’s roster.
