Jessica Jones creator Melissa Rosenberg and star Krysten Ritter promise fans an unforgettable series finale, following today’s announcement of the show’s cancellation. Along with The Punisher, Jessica Jones marks the last of Netflix’s Marvel Television shows to be axed, following the end of Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil last year. Filming on Jessica Jones season 3 began last summer, after which Rosenberg was set to exit as showrunner. The third season is still due on Netflix, however, no release date or trailer has come out.
Rosenberg had an impressive film and television resume prior to Jessica Jones, having produced and written for hits like The O.C., Dexter, and the Twilight movie franchise. She initially conceived Jessica Jones as an adaptation of Marvel’s Alias comic series and was turned down by ABC. With Ritter in the lead role, the show launched on Netflix in November 2015. Like its predecessor Daredevil, it went on to receive extensive critical acclaim and won Rosenberg a Peabody award. While hopes that the show would get an additional season on Netflix haven’t come to fruition, the creative forces have come out to assure fans that a satisfying ending is on the way; unlike Luke Cage, which ended season 2 on a cliffhanger.
Rosenberg took to Twitter to thank fans as well as Ritter and the series cast and crew for their support. Like the first and second season, the upcoming one will have 13 episodes to look forward to. As seen in Ritter’s post, the core cast, including Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Eka Darville appear to all be taking part in the finale events. Whether or not Mike Colter and David Tennant will return as Luke Cage and the villainous Kilgrave respectively remains to be seen. Colter hinted at making an appearance on the show last December, while Tennant is expected to drop some hints with Ritter who is a scheduled guest star on his new podcast.
Perhaps the biggest question for the third season is how Jessica will take her adopted sister Trish (Taylor)’s emergence as Hellcat, and whether or not the two will become allies in crime fighting. Given that Trish was responsible for the death of Jessica’s mother at the end of season 2, tension and combat are the more likely reactions on Jessica’s part, at least at first. The heroine’s unconventional origin as a superhero started with a desire to protect the innocent, warped into an unimaginably horrifying struggle for survival, and progressed into a story about resilience and identity reclamation. Season 3 presents the opportunity for the character to triumph over her lingering trauma, and leave her residual Kilgrave afflictions behind.
As fans wait to see Jessica’s journey end, Rosenberg and Ritter have proven that they can be depended upon to give the extraordinary defender the closure she deserves.
