Jessica Jones season 2 promises to be another dark and heavy outing for the superhero detective, according to her one of her key costars. Filming on Jessica Jones season 2 continues, although no release date has been set just yet. Netflix is amassing a growing slate of Marvel shows, and, after two seasons of Daredevil, plus single seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, the four main Marvel/Netfrlix superheroes will come together on screen for The Defenders, set to arrive on the streaming service this summer.
The Defenders will all go their separate ways again thereafter, however, and for Jessica, that means going back to Hell’s Kitchen and her Private Investigation business. Starring Krysten Ritter as the titular hero, Jessica Jones made its debut on Netflix in 2015 to very favorable reviews. Filming for season two is well underway at this stage, and it appears that we can expect some seriously dark narrative material, going forward.
Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage and appeared in Jessica Jones season 1, revealed the following with respect to Jessica Jones season 2, over the weekend:
Colter also says he talks to @Krystenritter nearly every day. Says the storyline of @JessicaJones season two is “dark and heavy.” #C2E2— MCU Exchange (@MCUExchange) April 23, 2017
Jessica’s dark, sassy edge, penchant for whiskey and her lifelong friendship with her adopted sister, Trish Walker, made her an accessible character and one which viewers identified with easily during season one. Jessica’s relationship with the villain of season one, Killgrave (David Tennant) brought to light some seriously disturbing scenes, as it was revealed that he used mind control to make sure she did his exact bidding during their relationship; even down to the fact that he had effectively raped her as she couldn’t use her own mind to object to his actions. It is perhaps testament to the writing, direction, and acting on the show, that a lot of those flashbacks were hard to watch and digest, and the whole storyline gave Jessica Jones a dark, gritty, and ultimately, real, twist that kept fans gripped.
Therefore, news from Colter that season 2 is dark and heavy is even more intriguing, since the show was pretty dark to begin with. In keeping with Marvel tradition, nothing is known regarding the plot of season 2, but we do know that Rachael Taylor and Ekka Darville will be back as Trish Walker and Malcolm, respectively. Will Travel has also teased his return as Nuke.
A list of new character breakdowns was also recently released, with the possibility that we could see Dr. Karl Malus appear, Paladin, or even Typhoid Mary. It’s all speculation, though, since Jessica Jones also holds the potential for original characters to appear, or even amalgamations of several different character elements from across the A.K.A. Jessica Jones comics. There’s also the confirmation that Janet McTeer has been cast in an unconfirmed role. It seems a safe bet that Marvel wouldn’t have hired someone of her talent without a very good reason; a new villain, perhaps, or a female version of the aforementioned Karl Malus?
Whatever McTeer’s role, and whatever the storyline for season 2, Jessica Jones is already shaping up to be a series that will once again keep viewers enthralled.
The Defenders arrives on August 18th, 2017, with The Punisher coming later this year. Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are now available on Netflix. Premiere dates for the next seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been revealed.
