Unfortunately for fans of Jessica Jones, the third season of the show will be its last on Netflix, as the streaming service has cancelled all six of its Marvel shows. Here’s what we know so far about Jessica’s last hurrah, and whether there’s any hope for a fourth season elsewhere.
Jessica Jones Season 3 Release Date
As of March 2019, Jessica Jones’ season 3 premiere date hasn’t been announced. But we do know this: the initial Netflix deal was announced in October 2013 and the entirety of season 1 premiered on November 20, 2015. As for season 2, new episodes were ordered in January 2016 and premiered in full on March 8, 2018. Jessica Jones season 3 was ordered by Netflix on April 12, 2018, with a 2019 release date set. Given the past production schedule for Jessica Jones, more episodes will likely arrive in summer or fall of this year. Like previous seasons, Jessica Jones season 3 will consist of 13 hour-long episodes.
Jessica Jones’ Season 3 Story
Fans of the original Jessica Jones comic know that major events in the title character’s life haven’t been seen on the Netflix series thus far. As a result, season 3 will likely be even more action-packed, especially considering recent production news (more on that next).
Jessica Jones season 2 ends with conflict between the title character, her adoptive sister/pal Trish Walker, and her estranged mother (whom Jessica had believed was dead), Alisa Jones. Trish is out for vengeance because she blames Alisa for the death of Dr. Karl Malus, the man responsible for saving her life. Ultimately, Trish succeeds with her plan after Alisa takes Jessica on a mother-daughter road trip. So, Jessica Jones season 3 will undoubtedly accentuate the on-going conflict between Jessica and Trish, along with the inevitable return of the Purple Man aka Kilgrave.
On a larger scale, fans are hoping that season 3 will include the Purple Daughter narrative, of which is currently ongoing in the comic. However, that’s quite a lot of storyline to cover in just one season, and it’s more likely that Jessica Jones season 3 will try to offer some closure for fans since it is - as far as we know - the final chapter of Jessica’s story. Series creator Melissa Rosenberg has at least promised that Jessica Jones will go “out with a bang.”
Will Jessica Jones Season 4 Happen?
Last February, Netflix cancelled Jessica Jones, along with fellow Marvel series The Punisher (Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist had all been cancelled earlier). Fans have theorized about possible reasons behind the cancellation, and we learned that Netflix most likely based their decision on declining viewer numbers. There’s also the fact that Disney and Netflix will soon be in direct competition, with the former company launching its own streaming service with Disney+ and gaining a controlling share of Hulu with the imminent acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
Netflix owns all the existing seasons of its Marvel shows, but doesn’t own the rights to those particular versions of the characters, so it’s possible that Jessica Jones could get a fourth season elsewhere. Hulu, which is already distributing Marvel’s Runaways, may end up acquiring other Marvel shows as well, so there’s always hope. For now, however, fans should get ready to say goodbye to Jessica Jones.
