Netflix’s hit reality series Love Is Blind kept people guessing with who would marry who, but the biggest mystery of the show goes beyond love. It goes to something surprisingly deeper, into the depths of the vocal anatomy and physiology of one cast member, Jessica Batten, and her fake baby voice.

The reality dating show involves love prospects forging a connection solely through conversation. After a course of several days of engaging in only verbal communication, while sitting in isolated pods, the hopefuls decide if they want to exchange vows at the altar. With only the sound of one’s voice and their ability to hold an in-depth conversation, couples took a chance at love and became engaged. The engagement allowed contestants to move on to work on developing a physical connection, adding a face to the voice while spending time on a Mexico vacation. If all went well on the extended rendezvous the couples traveled back home to Atlanta together to partake in all the necessities that come with getting married, including moving in together, discussing finances, meeting the parents and let’s not forget planning a wedding, all in a short amount of time.

But how does one enter the realm of vocal anatomy on a reality show about finding love? Thanks to the observations of the shows dedicated fans and The Cut, a potentially overlooked mystery has lead Love Is Blind enthusiasts to look into the voice of controversial cast member, Jessica Batten. The 34-year-old regional manager made quite the impression from the very first episode when she found herself in a short-lived love triangle with engineer Matt Barnett and personal trainer Mark Cuevas. After Barnett confessed an interest in marrying Jessica and then soon after reneging his said love, Jessica, broken-heartedly, moved on to growing her bond with Mark. Despite her obvious concerns with her and Mark’s 10 year age difference, Jessica said yes to his proposal which ultimately led to the discovery of her fake baby voice.

The Cut points out observations of several Love Is Blind viewers who noticed Jessica uses a different voice depending on who she is speaking to and what scenario she is in. They use video clips posted by a Twitter user as evidence of the inconsistencies in her vocal tone and pitch. Twitter user @shmailey posted a video clip showing how Jesica’s voice changes from a standard soprano in a one-on-one interview to a high-pitched (up-for-debate sexy) baby voice when she talks to Mark. The same Twitter user goes on to post a second video clip showing Jessica’s voice change mid-sentence as if she forgot her self made vocal regulations.

Love Is Blind aims to find out if love can indeed be blind. Through this process of having to find a mate sight, unseen other aspects play a crucial role in how you connect with someone. Yes, a conversation is key but the tone of voice and the authenticity of your voice can arguably be just as important contributing factors. In this particular case, it can also bring into question the genuineness of Jessica. Throughout the series, she switches her voice as much as she goes back and forth with whether she loves Mark or if she cares about their age difference or if she’s over Barnett or pretty much anything. Her indecisive and inconsistent behavior prompts whether Jessica knows what she wants or specifically what her own tone of voice.  All these inquires are all the more heightened when the episodes are binge-watched, witnessing the confusing and repetitive behavior consistently. Now that Netflix has released the entire series, revealing who indeed found love to be blind in the experiment (Jessica did not), viewers are only left with one final conundrum, why the baby voice Jessica? As we get closer to the airing of the Love Is Blind reunion let’s hope we can close this mysterious chapter of season one of Love Is Blind.
