Jessica Simpson has revealed what really went wrong in her marriage to Nick Lachey. Pop music fans were devastated when the couple called it quits because they seemed perfect for one another.
Simpson first started her career as a Christian singer but soon found that look was too mainstream and made it hard for record companies to want to sign her since she did not look wholesome enough. Simpson topped the charts at the same time as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. In the summer of 2003, MTV aired Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which starred Nick Lachey and his then-wife Simpson. The two originally met when Lachey worked on one of Jessica’s music videos in 1999 after being introduced at a Christmas party in 1998. For fans, the matchup of the two was “Irresistible” and thrust the two into the spotlight. The couple married in 2002, but in 2005 announced they were divorcing.
Simpson was always an “Open Book” with fans and the title fits her new memoir well. In her tell-all, she revealed to People that when she first laid eyes on the 90 Degrees singer her first thought was “Hello my life.” The “I Wanna Love You Forever” singer wrote frankly about their young romance and how their breakup went down. Fans will recall that Simpson was very open with the public about keeping her virginity intact until the day she married her husband. In her book, Simpson tells her readers that Lachey was her “first love” and that he loved that she was such a strong believer in her faith. The “Hardest Thing” singer had also told his wife to be that he loved her innocent approach to life.
Sadly, for the couple, the workload and cameras took a toll on them as they found themselves growing apart. The singer goes on to write that she found herself growing up but also falling out of love. Simpson attributed their troubles to being young and forging their way through reality television, which was groundbreaking at the time. The 39-year-old said when the cameras stopped rolling, the two didn’t know how to be alone together. Simpson eventually asked for a divorce in 2005, saying she could not lie to herself or her fans anymore.
Being dubbed the golden couple was hard for both of the young heartthrobs, but Simpson said she respected Lachey. He knew her as the sweet 18-year-old girl whose career hadn’t even begun. Fans were comforted to know that Simpson did not want to disrespect Lachey. They were together for seven years for a reason. Fans still hold out hope that one day the two will reconnect professionally for a duet.
