Reality TV star and singer, Jessica Simpson has revealed that her mom suspected the ongoing sexual abuse but never brought it up in discussion. Jessica has decided to share very intimate details of her young life with her fans, following the release of her new memoir, Open Book.
Simpson first burst on to the music scene as a Christian singer but soon found that her look was too mainstream and made it hard for record companies to want to sign as they felt she didn’t look wholesome enough. Simpson topped the charts at the same time as Mandy Moore, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. In the summer of 2003, MTV aired Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which starred Nick Lachey and his then-wife Simpson. The two originally met when Lachey worked on one of Jessica’s music videos in 1999 after being introduced at a Christmas party in 1998. For fans, the matchup of the two was “Irresistible” and thrust the two into the spotlight.
In Simpson’s memoir, Open Book, the pop singer openly revealed that she was sexually abused from the age of 6 to 12 years old as reported by People. Simpson explained to her fans her abuser was the daughter of a family friend and was only one year older than Simpson. The singer detailed how the abuse started with tickling on her back and then moved into more uncomfortable situations. The 39-year-old said as a child she knew it was wrong but was not sure how to confront the situation.
The singer’s memoir described how the event shaped her life and caused her an immense fear of being alone which included not being able to stand up for herself. Due to the trauma, she turned to drugs and alcohol to try and block the memories out. Eventually, in 2017, Simpson became sober and confronted her abuser who also had been abused as a child. After almost six years Simpson got up the courage to tell her parents what had happened saying that her mother, Tina just slapped her father’s arm and yelled: “I told you something happened.” But the saddest part was that neither parent spoke to her directly about what had happened to her, never confronting the isse or trauma. The mother of three explained that she did not want to upset her parents in any way but also knew she needed to write her truth in her book.
After revealing the truth to her parents, the family never ventured back to the conversation again as it broke their hearts that their child had been hurt. Along with her memoir which is set to be released on Febuary 4th, Simpson will also be debuting six new songs to correspond with her memories. Fans of the singer are excited to be able to support Simpson through this part of her career.
