John Turturro returns in a new trailer for the Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls. It’s been 22 years since the Coen Brothers’ Big Lebowski first introduced audiences to its cast of now-iconic characters, including Jeff Bridges’ timeless The Dude, John Goodman’s Walter Sobchak and of course Turturro’s Jesus Quintana aka The Jesus.

All these years later fans still clamor to see those characters to return in a Big Lebowski sequel, but given the Coens’ stated aversion to revisiting their own past works, it seems chances are slim that dreams of a Lebowski follow-up will ever come true. Indeed, the closest thing fans have gotten in the last two decades to an official Lebowski revisit was a Super Bowl ad in which Bridges reprised the role of The Dude alongside Sarah Jessica Parker as her Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw (not exactly what Lebowski fans were hoping for). But now, a Lebowski character is at last returning for an entire movie, as Turturro puts back on his bowling shoes and hair-net to play The Jesus once again.

The new trailer for The Jesus Rolls, written and directed by Turturro, sees the titular The Jesus and his band of fellow off-beat characters hitting the road – and doing some bowling (of course). See the clip in the space below (via Screen Media Films):

Loosely based on the French film Les Valseuses, The Jesus Rolls was originally going to be titled Going Places (after the original French film’s American release title) before being picked up by Screen Media for North American distribution. At the time the new title was released, Turturro spoke about the film’s mission in a statement, saying “It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women.”

Indeed, the original French film was considered very daring in its time, as it explored the carnal exploits of its lead characters played by Gerard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere. Those characters were however young men, while Turturro’s Jesus is well into middle-age, which presumably means he has less excuse for any “stupidity.” Along for the ride with Turturro are Bobby Cannavale, Jon Hamm, Audrey Tautou, Susan Sarandon, Pete Davidson, Christopher Walken and Tim Blake Nelson.

It remains to be seen if The Jesus Rolls will satisfy Big Lebowski fans who have waited all these years to see one of their favorite characters return to the big screen. At least going by the trailer, it seems Turturro is ready to fully unleash The Jesus, who was only a secondary figure in the original movie, and that should make for some very entertaining, if stupid, adventures.
