Joe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Endgame, wants to direct a Batman movie, assuming he were to ever actually helm a big screen DC project. It’s been a crazy decade for Joe Russo and his brother Anthony, who before getting hired by Marvel Studios to direct 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, were mostly known for directing sitcoms. The most famous of those was NBC’s cult hit Community, for which the Russos directed 21 episodes, including some of the show’s most beloved. The Russos also helmed episodes of Happy Endings and Arrested Development.
The Russos’ time as TV directors abruptly ended after the success of Winter Soldier though, which many fans still consider the greatest film in the history of the MCU. The brothers have since directed Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and now Avengers: Endgame, on pace to become the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. In just two weeks, Endgame has already earned over $2 billion worldwide, and broken many box office records.
Needless to say, while the Russos have repeatedly stated that their involvement in the MCU ends with Endgame, their directing career certainly hasn’t. It remains to be seen if Joe and/or Anthony will ever direct another superhero-related project again, but during a recent live Q&A session with Comic Book, Joe Russo revealed that were he to ever end up directing a DC movie, he would want it to be about Batman. It seems he’s a big fan of the Caped Crusader, and grew up collecting his merchandise.
Now realistically, it’s doubtful Joe Russo and/or Anthony Russo will ever actually direct a Batman film. That’s not at all because they couldn’t get the job, as DC would no doubt jump at the chance to work with the Russos. The big hurdle would be the Russos deciding to work with DC after being such a big part of the MCU, and essentially owing their burgeoning careers as blockbuster filmmakers to an opportunity given to them by Marvel Studios.
While it’s unlikely that Kevin Feige or anyone else at Marvel Studios would attempt to block the Russos from directing a Batman movie, or try to shame them out of taking such a gig, Joe and Anthony seem to understandably be very loyal to Marvel and Disney. Thus, they probably wouldn’t want to be involved with a project that might in some way hurt the MCU. That aside, one wonders how awesome a Russo-directed Dark Knight movie would turn out to be. Sadly, we’ll probably never get to find out.
