John Krasinski jokes Thor actor Chris Hemsworth scared him out of playing the MCU’s Captain America. After the success of Iron Man, Marvel Studios didn’t waste their time building towards The Avengers. That meant casting for the other members of the team. Actors have been open about their respective experiences trying on for these parts, but arguably some of the most interesting ones comes from Krasinski.
As fans know, The Office alum was on the running to play Steve Rogers for the MCU, but things didn’t work out. During the whole process, Marvel Studios was already eyeing Chris Evans for the part, but between the failure of his first superhero outing in Fantastic Four and the multi-movie commitment, the actor would decline the part. Given this, Kevin Feige and casting director Sarah Halley Finn continued searching for alternatives which included Daredevil actor Wilson Bethel and Krasinski. In a recent interview, the latter recalls a moment from his auditioning which involved a hilarious encounter with Hemsworth.
Dropping by at The Ellen Show to start promoting A Quiet Place 2, Krasinski was asked about his experience auditioning as Captain America seeing as he just filmed a Boston-themed advertisement for this year’s Super Bowl with Evans. Always game to share a good story, the actor talked about trying on the suit for the first time, and just when he was pulling it up, Hemsworth walked by, and made a comment about his physique. But instead of feeling good about himself, Krasinski felt more conscious considering Hemsworth’s own impressive body.
Over the years, Krasinski has been open about his time trying on for Captain America. While he did want to nab the role, he said he has no regrets over losing it to Evans seeing how good he was in the role. As for him, his career went on a very interesting path starting as a sitcom staple to an action star with the Jack Ryan series, and now a writer/director for the praised A Quiet Place where he teams up with wife, Emily Blunt. All that being said, the calls for Krasinski to eventually join the MCU are relentless. For years, he and Blunt have been fan-favorites to play Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic and Susan Storm/Invisible Woman respectively. With the imminent relaunch of Marvel’s first family on the big screen now that their characters rights are back with Marvel, the public is more eager than ever to see this happen.
“I went in and I tested for Captain America. Got to wear the suit. Which was really fun. This is a true story. […] I was putting the suit on, and I was halfway up, not wearing any other clothes other than this. […] And right at that moment, Chris Hemsworth walked by and he was like, ‘you look good, mate.’ And I was like, nope. You know what? It’s fine. We don’t have to do this. […] He was just like, jacked.”
Whether or not Krasinki takes on the role as Richards, he said he’s open to join the MCU. The franchise slate is currently full for the next couple of years with Marvel Studios branching out with TV series, but there’s no scarcity of characters that he can play in the universe. While Evans’ time as Captain America has sadly come to an end in Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth’s Thor is still around. And it would be hilarious to see them together on the big screen given this story.
