A series of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum Valentine’s Day e-cards have launched in promotion of the film’s upcoming release. Released with little fanfare in 2014, the Keanu Reeves-led action thriller went on to become one of the surprise cinematic hits of the year, making a significant profit on a modest budget and attracting rave reviews for its no-nonsense action and simple but intriguing premise. A 2017 sequel also proved to be a success and greatly expanded upon John Wick’s fictional universe, opening the door for a full-on franchise further down the line.
Unsurprisingly, a third John Wick film was announced not long after the second’s release and was eventually confirmed to be titled Parabellum. The threequel finds John on the run from his former mercenary comrades, with an extremely high price on his head following the events of John Wick 2. Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane and Lance Reddick will all be reprising their characters and joining the cast this time around are the likes of Halle Berry, Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham’s Penguin) and Anjelica Huston (The Witches). Chad Stahelski and Derek Kolstad will once again be returning as director and writer, respectively.
Ahead of the film’s release in May, the John Wick 3 marketing department is making full use of the holiday calendar and have released a series of Valentine’s Day e-cards to celebrate tomorrow’s (Feb. 14th) day of love and romance. The cards (which can be found via Lionsgate) include such heart-melting phrases as “I’d go to hell and back for you” and “You’re killer.” There’s also an option to customize the cards with your own (less violent) personalized message, should you so wish.
Any John Wick fans desperately searching for that last minute Valentine’s Day gift will undoubtedly be breathing a huge sigh of relief as Lionsgate comes to the rescue with these tasteful and heartfelt e-cards. Some might wonder exactly what relation Keanu Reeves’ hyper-violent action franchise has to the Valentine’s Day celebration, but it’s worth remembering that the movies feature one of the strongest, deepest emotional bonds ever put to film: the love between John Wick and his dog.
In all seriousness, these tongue-in-cheek cards are a harmlessly fun way to promote the forthcoming film and the irony in John Wick being the polar opposite to a typical Valentine’s movie is all part of the fun. The real question is whether or not John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum can live up the sterling reputation forged by the previous two installments.
